Upper Mustang is one of the unique trekking trail of Nepal. It is also known as ‘hidden kingdom’. It was the former Kingdom of Lo. There were royal family ruling this kingdom. Still, there is a king and family of royal in the region.
Highlights of the trip
This region is unique by its nature and people. The landscape of Mustang is semi-arid desert like. There are patches of land that highly fertile where most of the settlements and village remains. The literal translation of word “Mustang” is fertile land. It have rugged rocky mountains with deep canyons, ever eroding dusty cliff and Moraine Valleys.
This region borders Tibet. It was ancient trading route of Nepal and Tibet. Still, there is trading on regular basis on border. The region is highly influenced by Tibetan culture. People culture and lifestyle are in influenced by Buddhism. There are numbers of century old monasteries that is unique and amazing. The settlements are very unique and distinct. The houses and structure of the region gives the feeling of ancient time. It’s like the time has stopped in the region.
This trekking route needs special permit from Nepal government in order to travel.

Arrival in Kathmandu and pick up and transfer to hotel by office representative. Hang around Thamel on availability of time. Acquire and prepare necessary gear for the trip.
After breakfast, you will be escorted to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight or will take a tourist vehicles (Van/Bus) to Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful lake city and have plenty of activities to do. It have great views of the mountains and Fewa Lake. There are number of activities and plenty of places to visit. Taking walk around Fewa Lake, cycling, boating etc. can be done.
We will take early flight to Jomsom as there will be no flight after 12 am because of high wind. The trail will start from the bank of river Kaligandaki. We will follow the rocky bank of the river. Kagbeni is a beautiful small village. It is a gateway to Mustang. The border for forbidden region starts from here. Tourists are not allowed to enter after this point without special permit.
The trail is dusty and dry from here. The trail follows the bank of Kali Gandaki River. It is windy by the day. This place is famous for dry wind that blows all around the year. We will climb steep eroding hill to Chele
The trail uphill through cliffs. After reaching to the top, good view of Mt. Nilgiri can be seen. There are few settlements between the camps. As the terrain is harsh and unproductive, settlements can only be found in small patch of land where cultivation is possible. Syangbochen is a small settlement with few lodges. We will cross two passes the Taklam La pass (3,624m) and the Darjori La pass (3,735m) today. We will stay overnight in Syanbochen
We will cross another two passes today, Yamada La (3,850 m) and Nyi Pass (4,010 m). The trail goes up and down several time. Ghami is very old village with lot of old structure.
It will be lunch camp. The distance is short but it is uphill. We will descend to Ghami Khola (river) and cross bridge. It uphill from here. At beginning, there is very long mani wall (wall made with prayer craved in). Tsarang is an ancient village that have fortress and very old monasteries. We will cross another pass Tsarang La Pass (3,870 m) to reach Tsarang village.
We will cross another pass called Lo La pass (3,950 m). After crossing, we will see historic and amazing beautiful village of Lo Manthang. It is a very attractive village. The walled village is historical capital of Mustang. On the way, view of mountains like Tilicho peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Brikuti peak can be seen.
Lo Manthang is amazing place to explore. This village itself have very unique feature. There are number of monasteries which can be explored. There is a king palace which are opened to public. You can hike or take horse to place called Chosar. It have cave that is five stored and quite amazing to see. It was used for various purpose like burial, meditation place, hiding place during war and later converted to monasteries. But it is unknown about origin of this amazing caves.
We will uphill and descend to very old village known as Low-Gyakar. It have ancient monastery which we will explore during lunch time. This monastery have unique history and have distinct feature. After that we will head to Dhakmar. It is small village on bank of river. The red cliff surrounding the village make it very unique.
We will trace back the same route as we arrived to Syanbochen.
We will take detour from normal route to Chumsi Cave. We will follow the river and reach Chumsi Cave. It is religious important cave. After reaching Chumsi Cave, it will be uphill climb to Samar which is in normal trekking route.
We will trace back the same route as before and reach to Kagbeni.
We will trace back to the same route to reach Jomsom.
We will fly back to Pokhara. In case of non-availability of flight we will drive back to Pokhara.
Early morning, we take a car/tourist bus if we are driving or fly to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, the representative of Sherpa Khangri Outdoor transfer you to hotel and we can enjoy our day in Kathmandu. In The evening to celebrate our successful journey, we will have a farewell dinner with Traditional Nepali Cuisine.
Journey with us end here. Office representative will take you to International airport for final departure as per schedule requirement.
